E. Coli Infection

E. coli infection manifests itself in a variety of ways, but the most common symptoms are:

Diarrhea, which may be watery or bloody
Stomach cramps or pain
Nausea and vomiting
Low-grade fever

These symptoms usually begin 3-4 days after exposure to the bacteria, but it can take anywhere from 1 day to over a week for them to develop. In most cases, E. coli infection clears up on its own within a week. However, there are some serious complications that can arise from E. coli infection, including:

Hemolytic uremic syndrome (HUS): This is a rare but serious complication that can damage the kidneys. Symptoms of HUS include:
- Little or no urination
- Pale skin
- Fatigue
- Bruising or a rash
- Blood in the stool
Dehydration: This can happen if you lose too much fluid through diarrhea and vomiting. Symptoms of dehydration include:
- Feeling thirsty
- Urinating less often
- Dark-colored urine
- Dizziness
- Fatigue

Neurofibromatosis is a genetic disorder that causes tumors to form on nerve tissue. These tumors can develop anywhere in your nervous system, including your brain, spinal cord and nerves. Neurofibromatosis is usually diagnosed in childhood or early adulthood.

The tumors are usually noncancerous (benign), but sometimes can become cancerous (malignant).

Complications of neurofibromatosis can include hearing loss, learning impairment, heart and blood vessel (cardiovascular) problems, loss of vision, and severe pain.

Some people may benefit from other therapies, such as stereotactic radiosurgery or medications to control pain.
